More and more people use mobile gadgets to access web content, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is ever increasing. To meet this demand, the organization that supervises the universal domain name extensions, ICANN, established the dot MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it must comply with certain regulations. In other words, all dot MOBI websites must be designed to be accessed flawlessly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry. These incorporate how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.
The requirements have raised some questions considering the fact that the universal top-level domain extension is the only one that specifies what devices ought to be able to access a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be built in such a way as to be viewed by the majority of web browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
