The .SE country-specific top-level domain was started in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration procedure was really restrictive, so a very small number of domain names were grabbed. Persons were permitted to purchase no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was necessary, i.e. only Swedish individuals, business entities and organizations could secure a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened notably and, accordingly, the number of .SE domains has been growing each year.
