SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol which is used to connect to a web server and perform various tasks using a command line. The protocol is used by many skilled users, for the reason that the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it can't be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access may be used for a lot of things based on the type of Internet hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for instance, SSH is one of the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file in case the web server allows for it. If you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH can be used for practically anything - you can install software or restart specific services including the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is employed mostly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that permit you to employ the protocol if your personal computer is using a different OS as well. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote web server always listens for incoming connections on that port though many service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Web Hosting

SSH access is offered with all Linux web hosting that we offer you. With some of them, it is featured as standard, while with others it's an additional upgrade you can add with a few clicks in your web hosting Control Panel. You may get SSH access from the section related to it where you shall also find the information which you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You may select the password that you shall use and, if needed, you shall be able to change it with a couple of clicks from the same spot. All commands which may be used with our shared plans are listed inside a help article along with relevant examples. If the SSH access function is enabled for your account, you'll also be able to upload files using your favorite FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is included as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server packages, while with others you will be able to add it through the hosting CP if required - even just for the current month. In any case, you'll be able to activate and de-activate the feature with one click via the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same spot, you'll find the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You will also find a box where you can type in the password that you would like to use, since it does not need to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you could also change it as frequently as you want. The full list of the commands which can be executed in a semi-dedicated account is supplied in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and several examples. An extra feature after SSH access is allowed shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports such connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Servers

All our VPS server plans come with SSH access by default, so you will not need to include any upgrades or enable anything - as soon as the server is set up and you receive its login info, you'll be able to connect using its main IP address and the login credentials which you have selected during the signup process. As the VPS accounts come with full root-level access, there are no restrictions with regards to the commands which you may run. Your server shall be isolated from the other ones on the physical machine, so you shall be able to manage more or less everything using a command line, including server-side software installations and reboots. This way, you may work with your files, databases and any apps you install in a fast and secure way.
